The safest place for heavily polluted waste that cannot be recycled is in one of our two underground storage facilities. 45 years of experience have enabled us to dispose of a wide range of hazardous waste from a wide variety of our underground storage facilities are the best choice for these and most likely also for your heavily polluted waste:

  • Waste containing arsenic, cyanide or mercury
  • Residues from incineration plants, electroplating, filtration and chemical distillation
  • Filter dusts from the metal industry
  • Hardening salt residues
  • Contaminated soil and rubble
  • Residues of evaporated landfill leachate industries.

Safety thanks to optimal geology

The harmful substances enter the abandoned sections of our potash mines. Embedded in thick layers of salt and far below the groundwater level, people and the environment will continue to be safe from them in the future.

Biggest capacities

We are the only supplier in Europe to operate two underground storage facilities. This means maximum disposal safety for you. With the largest capacities and various delivery options, we can also handle large projects flexibly. Together, Herfa-Neurode and Zielitz have an annual acceptance capacity of up to 330,000 tonnes of waste.

The path your waste takes

Step 1: Arrival on site

Packaged in drums, big bags or sheet steel containers, your waste reaches the underground disposal site by truck or rail. In Herfa-Neurode, we also pack powdery waste delivered in silo trucks into big bags on site. In Zielitz the unloading of sea containers is possible.

Step 2: Acceptance check

Are the accompanying documents complete, does the waste match the declaration, is the packaging correct? In accordance with our high safety standards, before your waste goes underground, we check all details again and take a sample.

Step 3: Transportation to storage

Now the waste containers are transported several hundred meters underground through the shaft. Special vehicles take them underground to their destination, which is often a few kilometers from the shaft. For safety reasons, different groups of materials are each housed in their own areas.

Step 4: Storage

The waste containers are then carefully stacked in storage chambers. As soon as a chamber is filled, it is closed with walls or salt walls (multi-barrier system).

Step 5: Organization and documentation

Our underground storage facilities are organized like warehouses: The storage location and time as well as the quantity and condition of each waste are documented - including a reserve sample in the underground sample archive. This means we always know where everything is.
