Crop Protection Compounds

Effectively mixing macro- and micronutrients with crop protection compounds

The combined use of crop protection compounds and foliar fertilizers offers clearly operational advantages by saving fuel and helps to protect the soil by reduction of field traffic intensity. At the same time, the question often arises whether in practice such tankmixes are compatible or may cause problems with your spraying equipment.

For this reason, we have tested the most common tank mixes for their physical compatibility.

We are continuously updating this overview. We evaluate the compatibility of our foliar fertilizers epsoMICROTOP, epsoCOMBITOP, epsoBORTOP, and epsoPROFITOP. The foliar fertilizer epsoTOP contains fewer components, so it can generally be assumed to have better compatibility with crop protection compounds.

General information

Compatibility of components

epsoTOP is a foliar fertilizer based on magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). The other epso mix foliar fertilizers additionally contain micronutrients such as boron, copper, manganese, and zinc, which may affect the compatibility with crop protection compounds.

K+S has conducted laboratory tests on the compatibility of epsoMICROTOP, epsoCOMBITOP, epsoBORTOP and epsoPROFITOP with many common crop protection compounds. However, the results do not provide additional information about possible reductions in effectiveness or possible adverse reactions on the crop leaves. All well-compatible combinations are summarized in the table below.

We will continuously update the list with further test results for additional epso products and crop protection compounds.

Test conditions

Water: Tap water with a pH of 8.1 and a water hardness of 7.1–7.6 °dH (dH = German hardness degrees), which is classified as soft water
Application rate: 5 kg of epsoMICROTOP, epsoCOMBITOP, epsoBORTOP or epsoPROFITOP in 200 L of water (2.5% concentration) as the first mixing component (exception: sulfonylureas)
Under these test conditions and mixing ratios, none of the combinations listed in the table showed any deterioration in the physical properties of the crop protection compounds with regard to applicability when epso foliar fertilizers were used

Please note

First, fill about half of the tank volume with water
Use plenty of water while operating the induction hopper
In general, epsoMICROTOP, epsoCOMBITOP, epsoBORTOP, and epsoPROFITOP cannot be combined with growth inhibiting herbicides such as 2,4-D and MCPA
Always follow the mixing order (see below)
Especially in the case of tankmixes containing three or more compounds, ensure continuous agitation of the solution and spray promptly avoiding interruptions during spraying

Compatibility proven in tests cannot be guaranteed under all possible conditions. This is especially true for specific water properties (e.g. high water hardness, high temperature and high pH-levels) or when using generic products. Therefore, always conduct a small-scale test, a so-called jar test, before first use of new compounds with your spraying equipment.

We strive to keep the tested crop protection compounds up to date. However, we do not guarantee that the listed products always correspond exactly to the current approval status

Mixing order

Solid but soluble substances (WG/WP formulations) – dissolve solid fertilizers, such as epsoTOP, epsoMICROTOP, epsoCOMBITOP, epsoBORTOP and epsoPROFITOP completely with sufficient water (may take 2–5 minutes depending on the water temperature)
Always dissolve sulfonylureas first, then add salts
Add liquid products with undissolved active ingredients (SC, CS, SE formulations)
Add already dissolved active ingredients (SL, EW, EC formulations)
Add any additional liquid fertilizer if necessary

The dissolution rate is significantly influenced by water temperature (the warmer the water, the faster the dissolution).
Exception: When preparing tank mixes with the products Artus and Aurora use cold water to enhance the dissolution process (as per manufacturer instructions) and dissolve the crop protection compound completely in the first step.

Pay attention to pH value

Check the pH value

In general, the initial pH value of the spray water should be known or measured, as mixing different fertilizers can sometimes lead to significant changes of the pH-level. This change can have a substantial impact on the effectiveness of crop protection compounds. Attention should be paid when using pyrethroids. If necessary, a pH-level test using pH indicator strips should be carried out. As always when handling fertilizers or crop protection compounds, the general safety instructions for user protection in accordance with plant protection and hazardous substances regulations must be followed.

Set the target pH value depending on the product(s) used (e.g., pH 6 for epsoCOMBITOP). If necessary, use a suitable additive (e.g., citric acid) to achieve the desired pH-level.
Take carbonate hardness into account! The higher the carbonate hardness, the more acid is required to lower the pH-level.
Sulfonylureas dissolve 100 times better at a pH of 7.0 than at a pH of 5.5 and should therefore be dissolved in a slightly alkaline pH range.

In practice, lower concentrations (e.g., 5 kg in 200 L of water = 2.5%) and lower water temperatures (well water has typically a temperature of 5–10°C) are often used. As a result, higher amounts of citric acid (solid, 99% purity) are required to achieve the target pH values when using epso mix products. Guideline values for the required amount of citric acid at defined carbonate hardness levels are shown in the table below.

Despite numerous trials, the results shown above do not cover all possible combinations of crop protection compounds with foliar fertilizers. It is therefore advisable to carry out a simple compatibility test yourself. A cost-effective and practical method for testing the compatibility of different products is the so-called “jar test.” In this test, the respective products are added to a sealable, transparent container filled with water and shaken vigorously.

When preparing a tank mix, the correct mixing order of components with water must be observed: first, epso family products and other solid materials (granules) are added, followed by solid particles in liquid formulations (suspensions), and finally dissolved active ingredients.

Water temperature must also be considered. In general, the higher the water temperature, the better epso family products will dissolve.

At low water temperatures, thorough agitation of the solution is essential. If the tank mix partners are compatible, there should be no flocculation or precipitation, no strong discoloration, no excessive foaming, and no visible chemical reactions in the tankmix.
