Increasing the benefits for customers and using natural resources as efficiently as possible – these are the main objectives of the research and development team. The focus of the research and development team is on developing new procedures and improving established production processes, as well as continuously improving the quality of the K+S Group product portfolio and developing new products.
Analytics and Research Center
K+S opened the K+S Analytics and Research Center in the heart of our Hesse-Thuringia potash area in 2015. This modern building has its own research facilities with open laboratories, offices and a technical center building. Around 100 scientists, engineers and specialists work here.
Numerous R&D projects are carried out nationally and internationally at K+S production sites in addition to the research work in our own laboratories. We also work with external research institutes worldwide.
There is an additional focus on analysis. This helps to standardize analytical methods and facilities within the K+S Group as well as performing routine analysis for internal customers. New analytical methods involving salt analysis, environmental analysis, waste and online analysis (PAT) are evaluated, developed and validated for this purpose. Each year, more than 20,000 samples are processed and more than 300,000 analyses are performed.
A key objective of the researchers at the Research Center is to further develop processes and products for potash and salt production.

We use a wide variety of process engineering and chemical processing technologies to process our raw materials, which are extracted underground.
Within the K+S Group, mining includes prospecting, exploration and extraction of raw materials from the upper layer of the Earth’s crust, by means of using technical plants and equipment, the use of underground openings and the sealing and stabilization of redundant mines.
Geoscientists work for K+S in the fields of deposit geology and exploration, hydrogeology and environmental geology, geotechnics and rock mechanics, geophysics with a focus on georadar, geological modelling and drilling technology.
