Agreement with the Hameln Declaration district alliance

K+S and the adjoining communities of the Werra and Weser rivers intensify their joint exchange

Kassel, 19.02.2024
K+S and the Hameln Declaration district alliance want to further intensify their joint exchange on reducing salt pollution in the Werra and Weser rivers. The Kassel-based fertilizer and salt producer and the supra-regional association of districts and communities bordering the rivers have signed an agreement in Göttingen to acknowledge the constructive discussions of recent years and further institutionalize them in the future.

The agreement has a term of ten years and provides for a regular exchange of information. The common goal is to constructively support the further reduction of salt pollution in the Werra and Weser rivers as well as the respective measures planned for this purpose and strengthen the sustainable value creation of the potash industry in the Hessian-Thuringian potash district. In this context, the district alliance will examine what progress has already been made in the disposal of residues and what contribution K+S's further plans will make to improving the ecological status of the Werra and Weser rivers. In the spirit of this new, deeper cooperation, it was also agreed to clarify any points of contention in constructive dialogue.

K+S is committed to constructive dialogue with stakeholders

“With this agreement, we are deepening the trusting discussions with the district alliance and at the same time continuing our efforts to engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders,” says K+S CEO Dr. Burkhard Lohr and recalls, for example, the successful settlement talks with the community of Gerstungen and BUND. Over the past 20 years, K+S has already significantly reduced the pollution of the Werra and Weser rivers through high investments and great efforts. "We are pioneers in environmentally friendly mining and, as a reliable partner, we want to work together with the district alliance to further improve the ecological status of the rivers," summarizes Lohr.
