Bad Salzdetfurth

Inactive Mine

In 1995, a custodial group was established at the Salzdetfurth site, which was renamed the "Care of decommissioned plants" unit in 1998. It has been entrusted with the maintenance, provision, and safekeeping of all old sites in Lower Saxony. The mines and shafts to be serviced in Northern Germany are located in the area between Verden an der Aller, Helmstedt, and Göttingen. Since 2000 this unit has been called "Inactive plants"; in 2002 it was also commissioned to look after the old tailings piles in Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg. Today, the scope of responsibility includes 30 old sites in Lower Saxony, including a reserve mine (Siegfried-Giesen), as well as one site each in North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden Württemberg.
