The world of White Gold reopens to visitors

Kassel, 15.06.2020
From June 16, “Glückauf in the world of White Gold” will once again be the motto at the Merkers Adventure Mine, the popular tourist destination in the Wartburg district. Special hygiene measures and safety precautions have been implemented to protect visitors and employees. The experience of going underground to a depth of up to 800 meters with unique attractions is now possible again.

After the two millionth visitor had just been welcomed to the Merkers Adventure Mine at the beginning of March, the mine was closed for visitors a few days later due to the corona pandemic. With the reopening, however, some things have changed. Guided tours for visitors will be offered again at the usual times; nevertheless, the tourist attraction will initially be closed on Sundays too, as previously on Mondays.

Health protection as first priority

The highest priority in the reorganization of visitor operations, which are now beginning again, is the effective protection of both visitors and employees against infection risks. To this end, a hygiene concept has been developed based on the regulations applicable in the Free State of Thuringia and in consultation with the responsible authorities, which takes into account in particular the general conditions prevailing in mines. This particularly applies with regard to the distancing regulation adherence and the obligation to wear a face mask when travelling by rope and on the vehicles. Consequently, the group size for visitors guided through the mine has been reduced. Training of all staff was another important prerequisite for the reopening, allowing them to safely implement and monitor the rules of conduct and hygiene. As in the past, the safety of our visitors is first priority. After all, once everyone has acquired routine in dealing with infection prevention measures in their daily lives, this should not be a problem when visiting the mine. Corresponding information has been included in the visitor regulations.

Start of concerts only at a later date

Whereas visitor and special tours of the mine are possible again, concerts and special events are still not permitted under the current conditions. Scheduled dates will be postponed if possible, tickets remain valid. We provide up-to-date information on the website of the Merkers Adventure Mine (www.erlebnisbergwerk.de). As in the past, the visitor information center (phone: 0049-3695-614101; info@erlebnisbergwerk.de) requests reservations for visits and provides information on individual questions.
