Enough food to feed the world

By the year 2050, the global population will grow from 7.2 billion to about 10 billion people. Agriculture is perfectly capable of feeding them.To achieve this, however, it must become more efficient in some regions of the world. K+S participates in numerous global agricultural aid projects - with expert knowledge, application advice and equipment.

Most people affected by hunger live in constant poverty in rural areas such as India, Pakistan and sub-Saharan Africa. There is a lack of know-how and technical prerequisites, infrastructure and rural services. Soil and water, the most important bases of agricultural production, are often not used competently. The consequences: Water sources dry up while soils erode and lose their yield.

In these less developed regions in particular, it is therefore necessary to convey the technical basics of plant and arable farming and to intensify the transfer of know-how. Cooperation with partners from science, politics, trade, and agriculture is often the key to success, as the experience of K+S has shown.

K+S supports projects around the world

Better use of resources is all the more important because the world population is not the only thing. The needs of the individual are also increasing. In almost all developing countries, demand for meat and dairy products is rising. By 2050, half of the world's grain harvest will probably be consumed as animal feed. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, estimates that global demand for food and feed will increase by 70 percent by 2050.

K+S participates in agricultural aid projects worldwide. As part of the "Growth for Uganda" project, for example, we have already trained several thousand smallholders in the East African country from 2013 to 2019. On the one hand, this will improve the food security of smallholders; on the other hand, they will also be able to supply other people and trade with their production surpluses.

Sustainable food security is one of the most pressing challenges facing our global community. Every ninth person goes to bed on an empty stomach, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the World (FAO). A total of around 821 million people worldwide are currently affected by hunger.

The problem could become even more serious as a result of the growing population and changes in consumer behavior. In addition, agricultural land is shrinking due to global warming and inefficient land use.

In view of the pressing need for discussion, K+S regularly puts the issue of sustainable food security on the stage as part of its FUTURE FOOD FORUM. In 2018, we conducted it for the third time together with the business and financial newspaper "Handelsblatt". The focus was on creative ideas and sustainable strategies for securing world food needs.
