Application areas


During the chlor-alkali electrolysis, salt (sodium chloride - NaCl) is separated into its components chlorine and sodium.

The sodium part is further processed in various derivatives, for example as soda lye or caustic soda, as well as sodium hypochlorite. Chlorine is used in many applications. Its largest application area is the manufacture of plastics such as polyvinylchloride (PVC), polycarbonate or as intermediate product isocyanate (MDI) in polyurethane synthesis.

For the highest requirements of the various electrolysis technologies, K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH offers a great number of rock and vacuum salt qualities.

Due to its low content of secondary components potassium chloride produced by K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH well suited for chlor-alkali electrolysis (classic amalgam and membrane process). It is used successfully in the production of potassium hydroxide all over the world.

Paints and pigments

Potassium compounds such as potassium chloride are used in the manufacture of dyes and pigments. Moreover, Potassium Sulphate is one of the components used for cyan pigments, mainly for adapting color depth.


Potassium chloride is used as a conducting salt in weaker acidic solutions for electro-galvanizing. This helps to achieve higher voltage, thereby reducing the immersion time of the galvanized parts.


Potassium salts play an important role in metallurgic processes. Potassium chlorides are used for surface treatment and galvanizing, as hardening and soldering salts, and as smelting salts and drossing fluxes in foundry chemistry.

Industrial rock salts  are essential materials in industrial for the metal processing industry.


In the synthetic production of zeolites (crystalline aluminosilicates) potassium chloride is used for adjusting pore size. Zeolites are used as molecular sieves and among other purposes are applied in the purification of natural gas

Titanium dioxide

Depending on the production process, potassium chloride, potassium sulphate, magnesium sulphate anhydrous as well as epsom salt can be used as auxiliary materials in the production of titanium dioxide. The excellent quality of these auxiliary materials has positive effects on the quality of the resulting titanium dioxide (particle size, brightness).
