Trainer at heart
Jürgen reports on his passion as a trainer at Neuhof-Ellers. He talks about his professional career and the activities that await him every day as a trainer.
What has been your career like at K+S so far?
In 1980, I began my apprenticeship as a fitter at the Neuhof - Ellers plant. After successfully passing my final exam, I was initially employed as a skilled worker in various areas of the company. In 1990, I then completed further training to become a foreman in metalworking. Five years later, in 1995, I laid the foundation for training in the metalworking sector. Three years ago, I attended a further training course to become a learning process supervisor.
What made you decide to become a training manager?
It was very important to me to become a training manager, because the cohesion of the different training areas is an important component for the success of the entire training. I find the work as head of the training workshop particularly exciting because I can accompany young people on their personal development path and see how they mature and develop from year to year.
What are your tasks and responsibilities?
I am responsible for training industrial mechanics and machining mechanics.
My typical tasks include the coordination of work orders and the implementation of safety-related instructions. I think it's very good that the company attaches such great importance to occupational safety. The trainees are sensitized to the topic of occupational safety from the very beginning. In addition, I take care of the technical and pedagogical support of the trainees during their training period.
What is particularly important to you in your work?
In my work, I attach great importance to trainees learning to work independently and to take on responsible tasks.
How do you describe the working atmosphere and how has it changed in relation to your work?
Since I joined K+S in 1980, the corporate culture has changed considerably. However, the miner mentality has always been the focus of culture and this is still the case today.
My job as head of the training workshop has changed in such a way that today I see myself more as a mentor and coach for the trainees. That was different in my time."
On the one hand, of course, I try to explain to the trainees the facts they have to deal with in detail. At the same time, I attach great importance to encouraging them to work independently.
How would you describe your relationship?
My relationship with the trainees is based on a mutual appreciation, which leads to the fact that on the one hand, one can work closely together, and on the other hand a good working relationship develops.
Jürgen, please finish the sentence: To be a training leader for me means...
... to be allowed to accompany and support young people on their way throughout their training up to their successful completion.
